Setting up a custom domain for a portfolio

Registering and setting up a domain name can be a bit tricky and if you don't feel comfortable dealing with this kind of stuff we recommend that you ask a tech savvy friend or drop us an e-mail and we'll help you out.

Get a domain with iwantmyname

We recommend that you use iwantmyname to register new domain names. They make it super easy by offering automatic configuration of domains for use with PortfolioDeck.

Registering a domain with iwantmyname

First use this link to register a new domain with iwantmyname.

After you have completed the registering process on iwantmyname you need to tell PortfolioDeck about your new domain name:

  1. Login to your PortfolioDeck account
  2. Click ”Customise” in the top menu
  3. Click the ”Add a custom domain name” button
  4. Enter your domain name (eg. yourdomain.com) in the ”Custom domain” field and click ”Save changes”

You are done! The domain name should start to work within a couple of minutes, sometimes it takes up to a few of hours for it to work.

General settings for domain names

There are a bunch of domain registrars out there and all of them will work with PortfolioDeck. Examples of good domain registrars are: DNSimple, Loopia and Namecheap.

Configure your domains DNS

Your DNS provider should have instructions on how to configure your domain name.

  1. Add a CNAME record to www.yourdomain.com that points to: domains.portfoliodeck.com
  2. Redirect yourdomain.com to www.yourdomain.com.

Some providers allow you to sync the settings for your yourdomain.com and www.yourdomain.com domains, use that if available.

A-records

PortfolioDeck also support A-records, however this is probably not interesting for most users. If you want to point a domain name to PortfolioDeck with A-records use the following IP-addresses:

176.34.179.210
54.247.170.37

Let PortfolioDeck know about your domain name

After you have configured your domains DNS settings you need to tell PortfolioDeck about it.

  1. Login to your PortfolioDeck account
  2. Click ”Customise” in the top menu
  3. Click the ”Add a custom domain name” button
  4. Enter your domain name (eg. yourdomain.com) in the ”Custom domain” field and click ”Save changes”

The domain name should start to work within a couple of minutes, sometimes it takes up to a few of hours for it to work.
